95% Of Malaysians suffer from Lactose intolerance

LACTOSE INTOLERANCE

Lactose intolerance is the inability to fully digest the lactose in milk and other dairy products. This occurs when the body does not produce enough lactase enzymes to digest the amount of dairy eaten.

Lactose is a complex sugar (disaccharide) found in all dairy products, such as milk, ice-cream, butter, cheese, yoghurt, breast milk and some infant formulas. Lactase is the digestive enzyme which breaks down lactose into the simple sugars (monosaccharides) glucose and galactose which can then be absorbed through the intestinal lining.

The level of lactase enzymes manufactured in the body varies between individuals. A deficiency of the enzyme leads to the symptoms of lactose intolerance. When this happens the lactose in food moves undigested into the colon instead of being processed and absorbed. The undigested lactose interacts with normal bacteria in the colon producing lactic acid and hydrogen gas – resulting in abdominal discomfort, bloating, excess wind or gas and sometimes diarrhea.

Several studies conducted in Malaysia shows that 90% of Malaysians are lactose intolerant.

Its not always easy to tell which foods contain lactose. Here are some of the culprits:
  • Waffles, pancakes
  • 3 in 1 coffee / beverages
  • Breakfast cereals
  • Instant oatmeal / granola / cereal bars
  • Processed meat such as sausages
  • Protein powder
  • Chips or crackers (eg cheese or ranch flavoured)
  • Sugar substitutes made with lactose (eg Equal®)
  • Baked goods (Muffins, cupcakes, etc)
REMEMBER: always read labels carefully to make sure that you know exactly what you’re eating. If you aren’t sure whether something has lactose in it, take a LACTZYM lactase tablet just before indulging on your meal / drinks. That way, you can enjoy your meal without worrying about the annoying lactose.

FAQ about LACTZYM

Lactzym contains active ingredient lactase enzyme in sufficient dose to help digest lactose in milk or dairy products, hence it is useful for patients who suffer from symptoms of lactose intolerance. It does not contain any animal ingredients.
Simply chew or swallow 1-2 Lactzym lactase tablets just before consuming dairy. Lactzym remains in your digestive system for about one hour. The tablets should be taken everytime you consume meals that might have lactose/dairy in it.
You will notice improvement immediately after taking Lactzym. However, as there may be excess lactic acid and gas in the digestive system some symptoms may remain for a week or slightly more. After the lactic acid and gas has naturally dissipated, the full effects of taking Lactzym can be seen.
If your symptoms are frequent, we recommend you take Lactzym before every meal for one week ( You will need 20 tablets if you take one tablet three times a day). The lactase enzymes in Lactzym are solely for the purpose of digesting lactose. A reduction in your symptoms will mean you are lactose intolerant.

Lactzym is not a supplement that needs to be taken daily. Just take Lactzym before consuming dairy or dairy based products. However for those who eat out or are not sure of the ingredients in the food, you can take before each meal.

Lactzym increases lactase level temporarily, so the dose should be repeated if more dairy is going to be consumed after one hour.

Lactzym can be chewed. It taste good. It is convenient to carry Lactzym around as it is in blister packs.

The lactase levels in humans naturally decrease when a child is weaned. For most children there is still enough of the enzyme produced to digest the dairy in their diets, but for others they drop too low to be able to breakdown the lactose. This could be temporary, due to a recent bout of gastroenteritis or a course of antibiotics or it could be permanent. Lactzym can be taken by children 2 years and above. The tablets can be crushed or chewed.
Our bodies naturally produce less lactase enzymes as we age. Luckily Lactzym can supplement your natural supply of the enzyme so you can still enjoy all the benefits of dairy.
